I can't transfer my gTLD domain

When you want to transfer your gTLD domain, you may experience a situation in which the transfer fails. You enter the correct authorization code, but the transfer does not succeed. This can be caused by a restriction on your domain which prevents the transfer. This restriction is called a 'transferlock'.


How do I recognise the Transferlock?

You can check whether a transferlock is active by looking up the WHOIS details of your gTLD domain. If you see the status 'ClientTransferProhibited' or 'ServerTransferProhibited', a transferlock is active on the domain.
 

I want to transfer my domain to TransIP

If you want to transfer a domain to TransIP and you see the status 'ClientTransferProhibited' or 'ServerTransferProhibited', it is not possible to transfer the domain to us yet. In this case we recommend contacting your current provider. They can check the status and tell you when it will be possible to transfer your domain to us.
 

I want to transfer my domain to a different provider

If you want to transfer your domain from TransIP to a different provider and you see the status 'ClientTransferProhibited' or 'ServerTransferProhibited', you can check with us if something can be done about this. There are two different situations which we explain below.


60 Day Transferlock


ICANN, the organization responsible for gTLD names (.COM, .NET, .INFO etc.), has a restriction on transferring such domain names. The restriction is that if you have registered, transferred or changed the registrant information of such a domain name, it can not be transferred for 60 days.

 

Transferlock caused by changing the registrant information

In most cases it is not possible to remove the 60 day transferlock from your domain. The only exception is when the transferlock is caused by a change to the registrant information.

If your provider supports it, you will receive an e-mail after changing the registrant information. This link can be used to remove the transferlock from the domain. The link is valid for 14 days and not every provider supports this.

 

Transferlock caused by registration or transfer

In all other cases it is not possible to remove the 60 day transferlock from your domain. The only way to then get rid of this status is to wait until the 60 days have passed. Your current domainprovider can check for you when the status will be removed.

If your domain is registered at TransIP, you can send us a message via the 'Contact' button in your controlpanel. We can then tell you when you will be able to transfer your domain.


Manual Transferlock


It is also possible to manually put a transferlock on your domain. You can do this to prevent your domain being transferred without your permission. For more information about enabling a manual transferlock, see this article.

If it is possible to disable the transferlock, you will find the option to do so in your control panel after clicking on your domain. If this option is not shown, then it is not possible to disable the transferlock for that particular domain extension.

You can disable the transferlock by following these steps:

 

Step 1

Go to 'Domain & Hosting' in your controlpanel and click on your domain (do not check the box).


 

Step 2

Scroll down to 'Transferlock' and click 'Disable' to disable the transferlock.

It can take a few minutes before the transferlock is disabled. After this it will be possible to transfer the domain.
